Within the imagined arena of a two dimensional plane, painters are allowed to do what they please. I believe that a painting represents the opportunity to play with reality and discover the underlying truths that exist beneath the plane of perception. My paintings are based on “realistic” images, collaged into imagined spaces that adhere sometimes, and sometimes not, to the “laws” of light and perspective. I create my own personal reality in which the limitations of time and space are manipulated to reflect the feelings and thoughts that occur within the confines of my being. The painting becomes a refraction of this internal process. Characters sculpted within the dimensions of the painting now possess their own imaginary psychology and become independent of me or the viewer. Each painting is a collection of different perceptions of space, whether it is psychological or physical space, and fits together within one sphere like the notes of a song or the movements of a dance. Context directly effects the spatial relationships of painting - relationships that do not exclusively rely on form to define space. The movement of time, the narrative, forms the psychological moment that inhabits the entire sphere of illusion. It is essential to move into the depths of perceived space in order to get into the muck of existence.
